8th Avenue in Calgary's city centre is also known as Stephen Avenue Walk. It is a promenade in the heart of downtown Calgary that is exclusively for pedestrian use. Many of Calgary's most historic buildings are located along Stephen Avenue, which also contain boutiques, restaurants, and retail stores.
At its intersection with Centre Street, the City of Calgary painted Stephen Avenue Walk with the colors of the rainbow in observance of Calgary's Pride Festival and the LGBTQ community.
The street is the namesake of George Stephen, who was the first president of the Canadian Pacific Railway.
