HERE TODAY, GONE TO MAUI... 32 images Created 6 Dec 2012
Come experience the different faces of Maui, one of the eight principal islands of Hawaii. Part of Maui’s mystic charm is that the island is so much more than what comes to mind when you think of its name.
Even though the island is graced with its renowned, beautiful, sandy beaches bordered by crystal blue waters and hotel resorts, did you know that Maui also features almost every type of natural landscape imaginable, all within its area of 727 square miles (1,883 km2)?
From the shores of Kāʻanapali to the seaside town of Hana, Maui features dense rain forests, arid deserts, jungles, deep canyons, and rocky coastlines created by volcanic lava. To literally cap all of these, Maui is crowned by its tallest peak, Haleakala, a dormant volcano with two peaks rising two miles above the coast of the island. In fact, most of Maui was actually created by the volcanic lava that erupted from Haleakala! As you ascend the majestic volcano to its summit, there will be times when you are at the same level as the clouds and, even more thrilling, looking down through them to the rest of the island below.
Enjoy your excursion of Maui in this gallery (with a few, additional images from Kailua-Kona from the Big Island of Hawai’i)!
