While in Accra, TIA had the opportunity to spend a day in Cape Coast, the historical capital of Ghana when it was formerly known as the Gold Coast (a name derived from several European seafarers and imperialists when gold was in abundance in the region).
Cape Coast is scenically eye-catching, with the vivid blue waters of the Gulf of Guinea splashing along the illustrious and expansive beaches of the city, in contrast with its brightly colored homes and fishing boats.
In this gallery, you will view scenes from Cape Coast and neighboring Elmina, the first Portuguese settlement in Ghana established in the late 15th century!
In spite of its natural beauty, Cape Coast is also the location of one of the most atrocious abominations in our world's history, the slave trade of thousands of men, women, and children from West Africa to the Americas.
The experience of visiting two of the castles -- in which human beings were routinely tortured and delivered into coerced subservience of other human beings across our oceans -- was somber, melancholic, and indelible.

29 imagesTIA humbly invites you to view photographs of Cape Coast Castle, one of 40 slave castles constructed along the West African coast. Cape Coast Castle was one of the primary locations of the Transatlantic slave trade between the 16th and 19th centuries. It is with the deepest and most profound respect for all the human lives which passed through this castle, in knowledge of what they experienced at this location, that I share these images with you.
